vi, 516pp, plates. Later half morocco and cloth by Zaehnsdorf, raised bands, spine in six panels, title lettered direct to second panel, author to third, remaining with gilt double fillet border, marbled endpapers.
Externally very good, internally a few small nicks and tears, lightly browned, a few fore-edges repaired, page v/vi (contents leaf) with repaired tear but with considerable loss affecting text, plate opposite page 425 with loss to foot (repaired) but catching text to foot of image with some loss to text.
With twenty-two plates by 'Quiz'.
This work "takes up the story of Nicholas where Dickens left off ... While far short of Dickens, the writing is lively, and the quite incredible plot is partly compensated for by the vivid pictures of London low-life" (James, 'Fiction for the Working Man', page 67)
