Two volumes complete - Volume One - [8], v-viii, [7], 2-148pp; [9], 2-164pp and Volume Two - [9], 2-155pp; [12], 2-199pp, [1]. Twentieth century full green calf by Zaehnsdorf, raised bands, spines in six panels, title label to second panel, author/volume label to third with small date label to foot, remaining panels gilt with central floral device and fleuron corner pieces, covers with gilt triple fillet border and small flower head corner pieces, double line to edges and floral roll to inner edges, a.e.g., marbled endpapers. Now housed in a cloth slipcase made by Temple Bookbinders. Very slightly rubbed to extremities, couple of tiny dinks to covers, but generally externally very good indeed. Internally occasionally very lightly browned, some occasional light staining to margins, some repaired worming to lower margins of first volume and the bottom margin of the last two text leaves of volume one have been renewed, but generally quite bright and clean. With five maps and one plate. Initial advertisement leaf and engraved frontispiece to first volume. Frontispiece in the second state, with vertical chain lines and latin inscription. Bibliographically complicated, here we are sticking to Teerink's designation of the three 1726 editions as 'first' editions, designated A, AA and B. This copy has some elements of Teerink's AA printing (ie. the page numbering beginning afresh for each part), but it also has some elements of Teerink B (ie. the title part to Part III has the Volume II statement on it). An attractive set of Gulliver's Travels, "the most mature, the most pondered, of all Swift's works, and the most complex" (Dobree, 'English Literature in the Early Eighteenth Century 1700-1740', page 446)See Teerink/Scouten 289-291; PMM 185, noting that Gulliver's Travels "has given Swift an immortality beyond temporary fame"
