Four volumes complete - Volume One - iv, ii, [1], vi-xxiv, 835pp, [1]; Volume Two - xxvi, 744pp; Volume Three - xx, 656pp and Volume Four - xx, 692pp. Slightly later full morocco, bevelled boards, raised bands, spine in six panels, title in gilt to second panel, volume to fourth, remaining panels with gilt roundels to corners and a six fleuron panel in black. Covers with inner panel bordering a fleuron roll and an outer panel of greek key roll joined by bevels with and outer triple fillet border with squares in the corners surrounding a large fleuron all in black, four small dots around the fleuron in gilt, with small gilt devices either side of the bevel join, all edges dyed red, with combed and curled marbled endpapers. Slightly rubbed to extremities, one or two very discreet repairs to the leather, otherwise externally very good. Internally, in volume two Bb3 has a couple of small holes to bottom margin, Gg has a stain to bottom margin, one or two small nicks and tears, otherwise quite bright and clean. Presentation copy to Earl Eldon, with his small round bookplate to reverse of front marbled endpaper, to 'the right honourable the Lord Chancellor with the translators compliments (Eldon was the Lord Chancellor during Pitt's administration). With a total of fifty-nine handsome lithographic plates and maps (as per the V+A copy on COPAC)
