Historiae Philippicae
Historiae Philippicae
Van Gouwen, G.
Henricum Westenium
Justini (Justinus), Graevii, J.G. (Ed)
690
[68], 656pp, [120]. Full vellum, smooth back divided into five panels, gilt lozenge shaped tool to each panel, author and title in ink to second, covers with double fillet gilt border, volute corner pieces, with the coat of arms of The Hague to centre.
Gilt rubbed, largely absent from spine, lacks ties, slightly rubbed to extremities. Internally some light browning and some dust-staining, but generally clean, engraved title slightly loose but holding.
Additional engraved title, with letterpress title in red and black.
A reprint of the first Graevii edition of 1688, but with all the important notes. Dibdin notes (of the earlier Graevii edition) that "these editions, containing all the variorum notes and those of Graevius, are much superior ... Graevius ... corrected the errors of Bongarsius, and formed the text of Justin by sober critical rules. The last four editions are preferable, as they contain the notes of Faber, Vorstius and Scheffer" (Dibdin 4th ed. page 139). The aforementioned notes are all included in this variorum edition.
