xxix, [7], 1-196, 1-207pp, [1]. Later full calf, raised bands, spine in six panels, morocco title label to second panel, contrasting place / date label to third, remaining panels with gilt central lozenge floral spray and volute corner pieces, covers with triple fillet border, gilt roll to edges, blind roll to inner dentelles, all edges marbled with 'spanish' marbled endpapers. Rubbed to extremities, especially outer joints, small repair to head of front outer joint, some abrasions to covers, resulting in small amount of loss to leather. Occasional light browning internally, maps lightly browned, but generally quite bright and clean. Small amount of loss to bottom margin of K5 (not affecting text), old repair to reverse of M8. Complete with two folding maps and nineteen plates (seven folding). Title in red and black. Robinson wrote the introduction to this work (see ODNB), Hill notes that it is "of particular interest because of its description of Narbrough's passage in the Batchelour through the Strait of Magellan ... which was much read by later navigators ... the book is also important because it contains one of the earliest English accounts of Abel Janszoon Tasman's famous voyage of 1642 from Batavia, during which he discovered Tasmania and New Zealand ... The narrative of Friedrich Martens, here first translated into English, was the first book on a voyage to Spitsbergen and Greenland" (Hill). Hill 1475; Cox I:8; NMM I:30; Wing N154; Howgego I:741-2
