Nineteenth century straight grain morocco by Zahnsdorf, first two volumes with raised bands, spines in six panels, title lettered direct to second panel, volume to fourth, remaining panels with lion rampant device, covers with thick double fillet frame and large central gilt device of Robert Tyndall Hamilton Bruce on slightly lighter green morocco onlays, t.e.g., silk endpapers. Supplement bound to match but with smooth back

Slightly rubbed to extremities, a few light scratches to upper cover of volume one, some discolouring to upper cover of supplement and inner edges of volume one, but generally in good order. Internally some evidence of the removal of bookplates, some browning to edges, occasional minor foxing, one or two section lightly browned but generally quite bright and clean

Title page of first volume dated 1797, but actually published 1798, with the advert leaf showing the fourth edition of 'Quadrupeds'. Large paper copies, each published in an edition of around two hundred copies
