Rome and Its Environs: Drawn from Nature and on Stone
Reference
1289
£5,000
Engraved title, list of subjects and twenty-five plates. Publishers quarter morocco and moire cloth, title and author in gilt to spine and upper cover, primrose endpapers. Recased, rubbed, corners bumped. Internally occasional spots of foxing, but generally fairly bright and clean.
Complete with lithographic vignette title and twenty-five full-page tinted lithographs, with list of subscribers laid in.
Abbey states there were two hundred and nine subscribers, including Queen Victoria, but there are only one hundred and fifty-nine listed on the subscriber sheet. Field noting that 'these lithographs which were done by Lear on what was apparently his first visit to Rome in 1841, are excellent examples of his skill. They are also characteristic of the best type of landscape drawing of that period and if he had retained the same freshness in his work throughout his life, his name as an artist would be better known today' (Field, page 118).
