[Illuminated Manuscript Book]
A.P.
587
[32]pp of vellum with tissue guards, (ignoring blanks). Full morocco, bevelled edges, smooth back, leather joints. Spine with gilt volute decoration, covers with a single blind fillet bordering an elaborate volute, roundel, trefoil and star frame, with the title in gilt on a sunken inner panel, gilt roll to edges, gilt rules to inner edges, a.e.g. watered silk endpapers with gilt double fillet border. Internally some minor cockling, occasional hints of foxing, mainly to tissue guards, but generally bright and clean. Illuminated manuscript by A.P. for E.J.P., attractively styled, with floral borders and ornamented initials. The coat of arms on the title is that of the Perkins family of Chipstead Place, Kent (Frederick Perkins was a noted bibliophile whose library was sold by Sothebys in 1889 - See De Ricci page 96). Both A.P. and E.J.P. presumably being relatives of Perkins'. The binding is almost certainly by Folthorpe of Brighton (there is a defective binders ticket to the reverse of the front silk endpaper). The text is from the Second Book of Kings
