Contemporary dark mottled calf, later rebacked in lighter calf, smooth back, spine in six panels, title label to second, remaining panels with central fleuron device and leafy stem corner pieces. Rubbed, corners bumped. Internally the endpapers and pastedowns are browned to edges, title and engraved portrait lightly foxed, a couple of small stains to text block edges, with a couple of small stains to margins, and several manuscript corrections to text. Engraved portrait frontispiece (by White after Kneller), title in red and black, folding table. Pepys' "only acknowledged publication. Upon this he lavished a great deal of thought and care" (Pforzheimer). Bookplates of two former owners to front pastedown (John Stuart Groves and Robert Zimmerman), and the contemporary ownership inscription of the English politician Will.[iam] Sacheverall to lower pastedown.
