A group of twelve monochrome watercolours by Robert Cruikshank, depicting naval and shipping scenes. Full straight-grain morocco, raised bands, spine in six panels, title in gilt to second panel, running title to third, remaining panels with central urn in gilt and volute corner pieces in blind, covers with blind anthemion roll bordered by gilt single fillets, inner panel of gilt single fillet, with palmette corner pieces, upper cover with title to centre in gilt, gilt rules to edges, gilt roll to inner edges, a.e.g., curl pattern marbled endpapers. Very slightly rubbed to extremities, generally bright and clean. The watercolours, approximately 140 x 90mm in size, are laid down and mounted, with occasional very minor surface rubbing and spots of dirt, but generally clean, each is signed and nine are titled in pen beneath. Binding is by Riviere and Son. Prior to his later life as an illustrator, Robert Cruikshank had originally been a midshipman, but on his maiden voyage fell out with his captain and was abandoned on St. Helena. An attractive collection, possibly done to illustrate an edition of Duncan's 'British Trident'
