Carroll, Lewis; [Dodgson, Charles Lutwidge]
1432
[8], ix-xi, [1], 131pp, [5]. Publisher's full vellum, title in gilt to spine and upper cover, four cloth ties, silk book marks
Vellum very slightly soiled, internally some light foxing to fore-edge margin of G2 and Q1, with a hint of foxing on a couple of other pages, but generally bright and clean, silk bookmarks frayed to ends. Previous owner's gift inscription to ffep, bookplate of E.U. King to front pastedown. With a letter from Anthony Rota laid in offering to pay twenty pounds for the book in 1964
One of twelve copies (ten for sale), printed on vellum, this being number three. Housed in a later drop back box (slightly ill-fitting with a small stain to upper board). With Tenniel's famous illustrations
Ransom notes that these vellum copies are bound in limp Kelmscott vellum, and were originally priced at twelve guineas
Ransom, Riccardi 12; Williams, Madan, Greene and Crutch, page 238, noting this edition is with the "original illustrations, four slightly enlarged"
