Two volumes complete - Volume One - xii, 411pp, [1] and Volume Two - viii, [2], 463pp, [1]. Near contemporary half-calf and pebble-grain cloth, raised bands, spine in six panels, author / title label to second panel, volume number in gilt to fourth, bands with rope roll in gilt, all edges sprinkled in red. Slightly rubbed to extremities, abrasion to leather on upper cover of volume two, minor discolouring. Previous owners book label to front endpapers, otherwise internally bright and clean. With three folding colour maps, twenty full-page illustrations and nineteen illustrations within the text. "Scholarly first secretary of United States legation in St. Petersburg journeys down the Volga River and through Central Asia, March 23 - November 15, 1873, by train, boat and sledge to study the sociopolitical conditions of the regions recently annexed by Russia" (Nerhood - To Russia and Return).
