An Arabian Tale, from an Unpublished Manuscript: With Notes Critical and Explanatory [Vathek]
J. Johnson
[Beckford, William]
846
vii, [1], 334pp. Later full polished calf, raised bands, spine in six panels, morocco title label to second panel, remaining panels with central urn surrounded by floral sprays with volute corner pieces, covers with triple fillet border, gilt roll to edges and inner edges, a.e.g., with comb and curl marbled endpapers. Very minor chipping to spine ends, slightly rubbed to extremities, internally some minor spotting, lacking the final blank Y8 as often, but generally quite a clean copy. The first English edition of Beckford's 'Vathek', prepared by Samuel Henley with Beckford's knowledge, but published before the French edition against Beckford's explicit instructions. This is probably a trimmed large paper copy, being taller and thicker than other copies we have had. Chapman 3 (i); Rothschild 352; Summers 543 and Garside, Raven and Schowerling 1786:15
