[5], vi-xxiii, [2], 2-86pp. Full red morocco by Ramage, raised bands, spine in six panels, title and author lettered direct to second panel, remaining panels elaborately gilt with small flower head and leafy stem tools, covers with single line border, large leafy stem and flower head corner pieces, single line roll to edges, inner edges with dog tooth roll and more small flower pallets, blue endpapers, a.e.g. Printed throughout on vellum, apparently one of only two copies thus, with manuscript note to that effect tipped in at front. Former owner's bookplate to front pastedown, otherwise bright and clean throughout. Originally published in 1785, this vellum edition, with a separate title, was published in an edition of seventy-five in 1873. A collection of the apophthegms, maxims and precepts of the philosophers, heroes, and other great and celebrated characters of antiquity, including, Aristotle, Diogenes, and Socrates
