Jane Eyre
Three volumes complete - Volume One - [5], 2-304pp; Volume Two - [3], 2-304pp; Volume Three - [[5], 2-31pp, [1]. Contemporary half roan and marbled paper over boards, smooth spines divided into six panels with single gilt rule, title to second panel, volume number to fourth. Head of spines repaired, some rubbing to extremities, marbled paper rubbed with some loss, especially to lower board of first volume, text block cocked, small ?wax mark to upper cover of third volume. Internally lightly foxed with occasional light soiling, a couple of small punctures to text on I6 and I7 of volume one, catching the odd letter but with no loss of sense, ink line to margins of L3 in the third volume, with the name of a contemporary female owner, 'Maria Hargood, Bath 1848' to front pastedowns (almost certainly the wife of Admiral Hargood, who is buried in Bath Abbey). With the half titles to the first and third volumes, but missing in the second volume, and the first volume lacks the publisher's catalogue and the advertisement leaf. The loss of the marbled paper to the lower cover of the first volume, and the small amount of loss to the upper cover of the third volume, intriguingly reveals the original cloth, or probably just the remains of it, underneath. Now housed in a half leather and marbled paper drop back box, spine in six panels, title label to second panel, date to foot, dotted line to bands, remaining panels with central onlaid red rose and volute gilt tooling, made by Temple Bookbinders. Sadleir 346; Smith, pages 22-24; Symington, page 9; Wise, pages 16-20; Wolff 826
