Two volumes - Volume One - Title, list of subscribers, contents leaf, introduction and 37 mounted albumen prints, each with guard leaf and leaf of descriptive text and Volume Two - Title, contents leaf and 39 mounted albumen prints, each with guard leaf and leaf of descriptive text. Bound in half morocco and cloth, raised bands, spine in seven panels, title in gilt to second panel, author / volume to third, remaining panels filled with flower, volute and star tools, a.e.g., curled and combed marbled endpapers. Cloth rubbed, some scraping to morocco covering corners. Internally lightly foxed throughout, occasionally heavier but images generally unaffected. Originally published in twenty-five monthly parts. Frith's "earliest and finest work. The results, which had a tremendous public impact, are the more remarkable for the problems encountered consequent simply upon the temperatures in which they were produced" (Blackmer).
