Two volumes complete - Volume One - [3]-iv, [1], 2-464pp; Volume Two - [3]-iv, [1], 2-464pp. Later full calf by Bayntun-Riviere, raised bands, spines in six panels, title label to second panel, contrasting author and volume label to third, remaining panels gilt with central fleuron and volute corner pieces, date to foot, covers with two line border and small tudor rose corner pieces, gilt hatching to edges, inner edges gilt, marbled endpapers, a.e.g.
Externally very good indeed, internally some light browning, a few spots of foxing, but generally clean and fairly bright
With twenty wood engravings by M. Valentin (eleven in the first volume, and nine in the second)
Originally published in eighteen parts in the Journal des Debats (1844-1846). Abridged English translations swiftly followed, but this is the first full edition, following the revised French edition of 1846, with the correct spelling of 'Cristo', and the extra chapter in the second volume, 'The House in the Allees de Meillan'
