Three volumes complete - Volume One - iv, 266pp; Volume Two - iv, 253pp, [1]; and Volume Three - iv, 248pp. Near contemporary cloth, title, author and volume in gilt to spine
Slightly rubbed to extremities, spines slightly darkened. Text blocks are lightly browned and lightly foxed, lower corners repaired to O2 and P2 in the third volume, crease to lower corner of P3, with a closed tear to the lower edge of page P7. Former owners name to half title of first volume
Each volume with half titles, but as often there are no advertisements to the third volume, with Edel and Laurence noting that "some copies of the first impression lack catalogue of advertisements at back of Volume III" (Edel and Laurence, page 53)
Housed in a leather entry slipcase, made by Temple Bookbinders
Originally published as a serial in 'Atlantic Monthly' and 'Macmillan's Magazine', it is widely regarded as one of James's finest novels
