Early twentieth century sprinkled panelled calf, raised bands, spine in six panels, title label to second panel, remaining panels gilt with a central fleuron device, surrounded by roundels, dots and stars, with volute corner pieces, date to foot, covers with panel design, two line border to central panel with small fleuron corner pieces, surrounded by a lighter coloured calf with dog tooth roll to inner and outer edges and a two line border, mitred corners with fleuron corner pieces, outer panel with two line border and dog tooth roll frame, gilt roll to edges and inner edges, a.e.g., spot pattern marbled endpapers
Head cap slightly chipped, outer joints rubbed with small splits to head and tail but holding well, slightly rubbed to extremities. Title with paper repairs to head and bottom corner, correction in pen to imprint line ('my' to 'me'), prelims with paper repairs to corners, lightly browned throughout, but generally clean, indexes with some paper repairs to corners and fore edge margins, occasionally catching page numbers with occasional loss. Lacks final page of index (Vertue and Dangers), with imprint to reverse, this is replaced in manuscript in a neat hand. Armorial bookplate of John Warren to front pastedown. An attractive copy, text in black letter
The first English translation of Dodoens' 1554 Cruydeboeck, itself translated from the French translation by Charles de l'Ecluse. Lyte's translation "was the standard work on herbs during the latter part of the century" (Rohde, The Old English Herbals, page 93). The attractive woodcut cartouche surrounding the title is the same as the second Flemish edition of 1563 and was designed by Pierre van der Borcht and Arnold Nicolai (Henrey, British Botanical and Horticultural Literature before 1800, page 32). There are approximately eight hundred and seventy woodcuts in the text, and are mainly reproduced from the same blocks used for the Flemish and French editions of the Cruydeboecke
