Rebound in later calf, rebacked to style, smooth spine, title in gilt to spine with fleurons, date to foot, covers with single fillet border, inner panel with title and leafy flower devices, with floral spray corner pieces. Covers rubbed, spine slightly faded. Internally lightly browned throughout, occasional spotting. Large closed tear to D3, small closed tear to Z2, 2E3 with piece missing to bottom corner, repaired and with text supplied in an old hand, with a small tear to foot of page catching text but no loss, small repair to foot of 2S1, slightly obscuring small part of caption. With engraved allegorical title and portrait to verso of **6. The first issue of Parkinson's classic, with the old style usage of u and v on page one of the text, the title is a pun, Park in Sun's (Parkinson's) earthly paradise. According to Janson, Parkinson "calls special attention to the seedling-scion compatibility problems of grafted stone fruits ... red nectarines only succeed when grafted on apricot rootstock, whereas yellow nectarines do best on plum stock...
